The R5-billion Mpumalanga project reached financial close in August on the back of the PPA, through which EXSA will buy all of the 525 GWh of electricity that the wind farm is expected to produce yearly once in full production. He notes that many recyclable materials have high recycling value. Consequently, many producer responsibility organisations (PROs) see the value in establishing buy-back centres, because these can significantly impact on the livelihoods of the poor and the unemployed, who are able to return recyclables in exchange for digital payments, vouchers or coupons that can be used to buy groceries.

Dairy producer Woodlands Dairy has commissioned a second biomass boiler that will use local sawdust and chip timber waste for steam generation, which will further reduce the company's heavy fuel oil use by about 31% and its emissions by about 1 046 t of carbon dioxide-equivalent a year. This is the second biomass boiler to be commissioned by Woodlands in its drive to increase the use of renewable energy sources and reduce emissions.

The International Renewable Energy Agency’s (Irena’s) ‘Renewable Capacity Statistics 2023’ report shows that with installations of 75 GW wind power came in as the second most deployed renewables technology in 2022, but at a pace that had slowed materially from the 111 GW of wind added in 2020.

This was stated by V&A Waterfront (V&A) CEO David Green at a media briefing on Wednesday. He reported that the directors and executives of the V&A had determined that loadshedding was likely to be a long-term problem, given that so much of Eskom’s generating fleet was old and needed replacement. Current installed solar capacity at the waterfront was 2 MW. This would be increased to 4 MW in the near future, although he did not give a timeframe. And there was the potential for even greater solar energy capacity to be installed in the coming years.

In order to boost energy generation from renewable sources and to adapt to a warming climate, Africa will need funding and technology from the rich world, Ruto said in an opinion piece in the UK’s Guardian newspaper on Tuesday. Unlike many African countries, Kenya already derives 92% of its energy from renewable sources and aims to increase that to 100% by 2030, Ruto said, referring to the country’s geothermal, wind and solar plants.

State-owned national ports operator Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a request for information (RFI) to the private sector as it intends to procure between 50 MW and 80 MW of renewable energy across its eight commercial seaports – Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura.

TNPA recently carried out an internal audit, which indicated a need to stabilise the entity’s energy supply and costs, and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions at the eight commercial seaports.
