Airbus expects a total global demand for 42 000 new airliners over the next 20 years

Global major aerospace group Airbus expects total air passenger traffic to grow at an annual rate of 3.9% over the next 20 years, driven by a global gross domestic product that would increase by 2.6%/year. Urban populations would increase by 1.3-billion people, while the global middle class would grow by 34%, to 1.4-billion, over the next two decades. These forecasts were contained in the “Airbus 2026-2045 Global Market Forecast”. This would lead to a demand for 42 060 new airliners between now and 2045. This figure would be divided into 19 820 to replace existing airliners and 22 240 to cover the growth in demand. Of the total, 81% would be single-aisle aircraft and 19% would be widebodies. The demand for latest generation airliners was driven by carriers’ desire to operate more fuel-efficient aircraft that produced fewer carbon emissions. Currently, latest generation aircraft accounted for some 39% of the global airliner fleet. By 2045, Airbus expected this to rise to almost 100%.

Airbus, MTU Aero Engines create JV to develop hydrogen fuel cell aircraft engine

Global major aerospace group Airbus and German engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines have announced the creation of a joint venture (JV) focused on the development and commercialisation of a fully electric hydrogen fuel cell engine. This is an outcome of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies at the 2025 Paris Air Show. The agreement is non-binding and is subject to the standard European and national regulatory approvals and social processes. The JV is expected to commence operations next year. Hydrogen has the potential to greatly reduce aviation’s climate impact over the long term. It could transform aviation in a manner analogous to the impact of electric vehicles on road transport. In aviation, hydrogen fuel cells would produce electricity which would power electric motors that would drive aircraft propellors.

This will be to meet the elevated demand during the northern winter/southern summer season. Currently, Turkish operates seven flights a week between Johannesburg and Istanbul and another seven a week between Cape Town and Istanbul, for a total of 14. The airline will introduce three extra flights a week on each route, to take the weekly total to 20. These extra flights will be operated until late March next year.
Africa’s first fully commercial aircraft fractional ownership programme has been launched by a company specially created to provide this service, SoterJets, which is a subsidiary of South Africa’s CFS Aviation Group. This service provides aircraft ownership with cost certainty and operational simplicity. “This marks a significant milestone not only for SoterJets, but for business aviation in Southern Africa,” highlighted CFS Aviation Group CEO Justin Reeves. “For many years, fractional ownership has been an underserved opportunity in the regional business aviation market. We have transformed that opportunity into a focused, fully operational, and commercially proven programme. The speed at which we fully subscribed and successfully delivered our first aircraft demonstrates both the demand for this model and the confidence that investors have placed in the SoterJets proposition.”

This event was highlighted by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). The carrier will operate this service using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody airliners. This is the airline’s first regular service to anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa. “The launch of Air Europa’s direct service between Madrid and Johannesburg reflects confidence in South Africa as a destination for business, tourism and investment,” highlighted ACSA Cluster 1 regional GM Jabulane Khambule. “Every new international route strengthens our country’s connectivity, stimulates economic activity and supports the continued growth of tourism and trade. We are proud to welcome Air Europa to OR Tambo International Airport and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

The global representative body for the airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has highlighted the delays in deliveries of new airliners. These delays are having real cost consequences for airlines, the association pointed out at its recent AGM. “The aircraft order backlog is over 18 000. And the average fleet age has reached a record 15.2 years,” highlighted IATA director-general Willie Walsh, in his 'Report on the Air Transport Industry'. “Moreover, being short over 5 000 more fuel-efficient replacement aircraft that airlines had counted on means missed efficiency gains, not to mention higher lease rates and increased maintenance costs. In total, supply chain failures cost airlines at least $11-billion in 2025. Today’s higher fuel prices will only make that worse.”
