Artificial intelligence has moved rapidly from experimentation to core infrastructure, bringing with it new demands on data centres worldwide. Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the AI conversation has accelerated dramatically – evolving from early curiosity to a strategic priority for organisations across industries. “In just three years, the landscape has evolved dramatically. At first, generative AI was all about writing emails, summarising documents and handling tedious tasks. Then last year, we started seeing agentic AI, with systems that don’t just follow instructions but begin taking stewardship over tasks. It’s exciting, but it’s also challenging to navigate.”

For operations that use heavy industrial equipment, downtime is one of the most significant operational challenges. Unlike smaller assets that can be easily replaced or moved, heavy equipment is often highly specialised and costly to transport. In many cases, moving a machine requires abnormal load permits and extensive logistical planning, making every hour of downtime a direct threat to productivity and profitability.

For many years, the success of mining Social and Labour Plans (SLPs) has been measured through straightforward outputs: the number of people trained, bursaries awarded and jobs created. Those indicators made sense when mining was one of South Africa’s largest employers. During the 1980s, the industry employed close to 800,000 people, with labour-intensive gold mining accounting for the majority of jobs. Today, despite remaining a cornerstone of the economy, the sector directly employs fewer than 500,000 people. Advances in mechanisation, automation and digital technologies have enabled mines to improve productivity, safety and environmental performance while requiring significantly fewer employees.

South Africa's plastics recycling industry continued its remarkable growth trajectory during 2025, even as the country's manufacturing sector contracted and ongoing weaknesses in the national waste management system threatened to undermine further progress. The latest plastics consumption and recycling figures for the year ending December 2025, released by Plastics SA, show that although domestic virgin polymer consumption declined by 2.8%, plastics recycling continued its upward trajectory, with total plastics recycled increasing by 3% to 485,000 tonnes. The findings reinforce South Africa's position as one of the world's leading performers in mechanical plastics recycling, while highlighting the urgent need to strengthen waste collection and support local manufacturing.

Hundreds of supply chain professionals from across Africa and around the world will convene in Cape Town this month to learn, share knowledge and network at the annual SAPICS Conference. Now in its 48th year, this event is more important than ever in a supply chain environment that is being impacted by shifting trade policies, rising costs, rapid technology advances and growing risk, says supply chain industry body SAPICS. Artificial intelligence, robotics, circular supply chains, ethical sourcing, public sector procurement, intra-African trade and healthcare supply networks are among the topics on the agenda at the conference, which takes place from 19 to 22 July 2026 at the Century City Conference Centre. This year's event is also significant because SAPICS is celebrating its 60th anniversary. This milestone is reflected in the 2026 SAPICS Conference theme "Legacy to Leadership: 60 Years of Connection, Collaboration and Transformation".

African cities need intelligence, not just smart city infrastructure

I am less interested in whether a city can call itself smart than whether it can act intelligently when something goes wrong. Too many smart city conversations still begin with the visible symbols of progress, for example, cameras, sensors, apps, dashboards, connected streetlights, smart meters, and control rooms with large screens. While useful, none of them on their own makes a city intelligent. For many African cities, the real problem is not a lack of ambition. Urbanisation is placing pressure on transport, water, electricity, housing, public safety, emergency response, waste management, and municipal service delivery. At the same time, many municipalities are expected to do more with ageing infrastructure, limited budgets, fragmented systems, and uneven data quality.

By Edwin Baru, Partner, Bowmans Digital growth in East Africa is shifting from a narrative around connectivity and innovation to one of compute – the processing power, networking and memory needed to carry out complex digital operations. To facilitate development in this sector, countries in the region must extend their power and water infrastructure, build heavy-duty infrastructure to house data centres and backup systems, and extend their access to high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity. To factor all these requirements into the mix, the growth of the sector in East Africa is best seen through a hub-and-spoke model, with Kenya serving as the central hub, connecting Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

The scheme includes more than R4.759 trillion (£219 billion) of construction activity annually and conducts over 8,000 monitoring visits each year. For the Building Industry Bargaining Council (BIBC), these figures highlight an important lesson for South Africa's building industry: meaningful reform is not achieved through inspections alone, but through what happens afterwards.

In a Security Operations Centre, detection is measured by what happens after an alert appears on a screen. Many organisations now have tools that identify suspicious activity across endpoints, email, identity, networks, cloud platforms and applications. Those tools are necessary, but detection is not containment, and an alert sitting in a queue does not reduce risk. A security tool can show that a login looks unusual, a file has moved unexpectedly, a mailbox rule has changed, or an endpoint is behaving differently. It cannot decide whether the activity is a false positive, a policy issue, early compromise, or a confirmed incident.

How often do we hear or read about accidents occurring in underground mines?
As Africa races to provide reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to more than 600 million people without access to power, energy experts increasingly agree that the continent's future will not be powered by a single technology. Instead, success will depend on intelligently combining natural gas, renewable energy, hydropower, battery storage and existing thermal generation into integrated, flexible power systems. This critical issue will be explored in depth at the 2027 Africa Energy Indaba, taking place from 2–4 March 2027 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), where government leaders, utilities, investors, project developers and technology providers will examine how diversified energy portfolios can accelerate Africa's journey towards universal electricity access while supporting economic growth.

The challenges facing South Africa's mining and engineering sectors are not confined to slope angles, rock mass ratings, or geotechnical monitoring gaps. Beneath the technical complexity lies a more fundamental constraint: a persistent and widening skills deficit that threatens the long-term sustainability of the industry's human capital pipeline. Without qualified geotechnical engineers, site investigation specialists, and technically trained operators, even the most sophisticated slope ...

When the going gets tough, the pros find new business. The global solar market has experienced several major growth years, adding 618 Gigawatt peak (GWp) in 2025. However, this is a slower pace than in previous years. Even in South Africa, where the solar market added 1.6 GW in 2025 over 2024’s 1.1 GW, that is still a slowdown compared to 2023’s 2.4 GW (Global Solar Council) as systems integrators and installers run into various barriers. "The demand is still there, but it's not as simple as before," an installer remarked at a recent local solar event, speaking off the record. "Loadshedding is not as big a concern as it was, so there is less urgency to install solar systems. Prices are also higher than before. People want solar systems, but they ask a lot more questions and look for more value."

The Recyclers Association of South Africa (RASA) has written to the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment calling for an urgent inter-departmental review of the Price Preference System (PPS) following the publication of the Draft National Circular Economy Action Plan (NCEAP) on 1 June 2026. The NCEAP establishes South Africa’s first comprehensive 10-year national framework (2026–2036) to transition from a linear “take-make-dispose” economy to a regenerative circular model. It commits to keeping strategic materials in circulation at their highest value, formalising 60,000–90,000 waste reclaimers through a Just Transition with service-level agreements benchmarked against the National Minimum Wage (R30.23 per hour), and positioning South Africa as the primary AfCFTA secondary materials processing hub.

Packaging is playing an increasingly important role across the value chain. Beyond its traditional protective function, packaging has become a key consideration in areas such as sustainability, supply chain efficiency, product traceability and brand differentiation. As market demands evolve, manufacturers, processors and brand owners are increasingly adopting new materials, technologies and production methods to remain competitive. Several of these developments are expected to feature prominently at the Propak Cape exhibition later this year. Sustainability remains a significant focus area, with growing demand for recyclable, reusable and fibre-based packaging solutions that support circular economy objectives. At the same time, businesses continue to seek ways to improve operational efficiency, reduce material consumption and optimise logistics through packaging innovation.
