It will provide the province’s small-scale farmers with a link to previously inaccessible high-value markets. Dube TradePort is located within the precinct of Durban’s King Shaka International Airport (KSIA). Its AgriZone 1 was established as a key centre for growing perishable produce, as well as post-harvesting handling and distribution.

Nonprofit organisation South Africa Wine, which is the representative body for the industry, reports that the national grape harvest for this year is estimated at 1.37-million tons, which is moderately higher that the amount harvested last year. This is despite the fact that the growing season is marked by significant changes in the weather, ranging from dry conditions to heavy rainfall. “This was a highly variable and technically demanding season, requiring producers to make precise informed decisions in both the vineyard and the cellar,” highlights wine industry specialist support organisation Vinpro consultation service manager Dr Etienne Terblanche. “From canopy management and irrigation discipline to selective harvesting and careful sorting under disease pressure, the 2026 harvest highlights the depth of expertise across our industry. The result is wines with excellent balance, concentration and strong premium potential.”

Government’s Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) eradication approach is most likely to fail owing to the vaccination rollout being fundamentally inadequate and slow at farm-level, farmer-led initiative FMD Response SA states.

The organisation deems it between 90% and 95% probable that government’s current approach to vaccination will not mathematically achieve the herd immunity required by World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

However, sustainable solutions provider Green Power Solutions (GPS) is urging growers to farm Bana grass – a protein-rich crop that can produce animal feed, biomass, green coal pellets and/or biochar for soil health improvement and water retention. Bana grass, which closely resembles sugarcane in appearance and cultivation methods, but grows and produces yields faster, could possibly be used as an alternative to, or grow in the same field as, sugarcane, enabling sugar growers and farmers to diversify their crop offerings.

SASA lodged the tariff application with the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa in October 2024. This will help to stem the current escalating surge in imported sugar that has cost the industry more than R1.4-billion in lost revenue. This is having a significant impact on all growers and millers, including Tongaat Hulett Limited (THL), which is unlikely to meet the April deadline to reopen its mills.
