Efficient sea and air freight operations play a critical role in facilitating market access for high-value perishables. The faster growers and freight forwarders can move products from farm to market, the higher the derived value, owing to extended shelf life, reduced waste and, ultimately, lower costs for retailers and consumers, says special economic zone (SEZ) Dube TradePort. Consequently, Dube TradePort is preparing to launch the second phase of its Dube AgriZone, an 18 ha, fully serviced, agriculture-focused development aimed at unlocking opportunities for “agri-entrepreneurs”, smaller growers, emerging farmers and horticulturalists.

South African year-on-year (y-o-y) food and non-alcoholic beverage (NAB) inflation declined again in May, the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) has highlighted. It was 1.9% during that month, compared with 2.9% in April. South African Consumer Price Index (CPI) y-o-y headline inflation in May was 4.5% (which was an increase over the April figure of 4%). Food and NAB inflation contributed 8.9% of the y-o-y CPI headline inflation in May. (All these figures are from Statistics South Africa.) Y-o-y food and NAB inflation is thus trending down, while CPI headline inflation is trending up. The food category with the highest y-o-y inflation in May was meat, at 7.3%. This was followed by NAB, at 4.9%, and then fish and seafood (3.6%), sugar (2.4%), oils and fats (1.7%), and dairy and eggs (0.9%). Cereals saw deflation of -1.4%, while the figure for vegetables was -6% and for fruits and nuts -8.5%.

The Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA) has revised its export estimate for the 2026 lemon season upwards from 45.8-million 15 kg cartons to 49.4-million cartons, which reflects the dynamic and somewhat unpredictable nature of the current season. The adjustment is largely attributed to favourable growing conditions across key producing regions. Although the season started later than usual, three significant cold fronts accelerated fruit colour development, contributing to improved readiness for export. Increased rainfall in many lemon-producing areas has resulted in a positive growth curve, supporting larger fruit sizes, ultimately resulting in higher carton volumes.

In mining and materials handling, selecting the correct welding and hard facing process is crucial to combat abrasion and impact wear, observes industrial engineering solutions supplier Weartech. For on-site work, the company has noted that clients typically rely on flux-cored arc or open-arc welding because it is robust, portable and performs well in harsh environments. In workshop settings, submerged arc welding is preferred for large components, owing to its high deposition rates and consistent quality.
