Worker killed in accident at Central Basin AMD treatment plant

State-owned Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) on Wednesday reported that a worker had been killed in an accident at the Central Basin acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment plant, which is under its management.

The worker was an employee of contractor Proxa. The fatality occurred when a mobile crane that was being used in the cleaning of a reactor unit at the treatment plant toppled over.

The circumstances surrounding the event are under investigation by the TCTA, the Department of Labour and Employment and the South African Police Services.
