About 35 000 delegates from more than 170 countries are expected to gather at this year’s World Water Forum, which will take place from April 12 to 17 in the South Korean cities of Daegu and Gyeongju. The forum, which is jointly organised by multistakeholder platform organisation the World Water Council and the Republic of Korea, will focus on the implementation of water-related solutions with the goal of a better future for all.

The seventh World Water Forum will comprise a variety of cultural events, side events, a water exhibition and a citizen’s forum, which includes a youth and children’s forum, to raise awareness about global water issues.

The event will attract a range of participants from the international water community, including academics, research institutions, enterprises, professional networks, governments and policymakers, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organisations, and representatives from various sectors, such as agriculture, food and energy.

Organisers of the seventh World Water Forum have taken two years to prepare for the event and have collaborated with various stakeholders to ensure that the event covers the themes of regionalism, the politics of water and water technology.

Besides the international political conferences and about 300 preparatory sessions, the forum will comprise three distinctive programmes, including the Water Showcase, the World Water Challenge and the Daegu & Gyeongbuk Water Prize, which will highlight successful and innovative solutions in the water field.

The Water Showcase is a collection of case studies that are being reviewed to find the most innovative experiences demonstrating the implementation of water solutions in diverse fields, such as research, industry and education. The nine best cases will be presented at the Water Showcase World Final and awarded a trophy and a cash prize. The case study that depicts the best example of implementation will be chosen online by the public.

The World Water Challenge, which falls under the science and technology category, will showcase individuals’ or organisations’ solutions to overcoming water problems using science and technology. The ten best solutions will be invited to the seventh World Water Forum and will receive their awards during the World Water Challenge ceremony.

The most outstanding case study for both the Water Showcase and the World Water Challenge will be awarded the Daegu & Gyeongbuk Water Prize. The winner will receive $27 700 during the forum’s closing ceremony. Other prizes to be awarded during the seventh World Water Forum include the King Hassan II Great World Water Prize, the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize and the Mexico Water Prize.
