Germany-based TLT-Turbo and local industrial fans and ventilation companies MechCaL and TLT ACTOM will team up to produce and distribute a full range of ventilation products for the mining, construction, industrial and power markets in South Africa and the wider sub-Saharan Africa region.

After three years of negotiations, which included the majority shareholder acquisitions of MechCaL and TLT ACTOM, TLT-Turbo announced a collaboration structure last month, which will combine the global resources and expertise of TLT-Turbo with the client base, distribution network and product innovation of MechCaL and TLT ACTOM.

The product lines will be based on the entirety of the group’s proprietary ventilation solutions, which include the maintenance and refurbishment of process, power and primary and secondary mining fans, as well as other value-added services as part of a ventilation-on-demand solution.

TLT-Turbo MD Rainer Redinger says that this move forms part of the company’s global strategy to become the world leader in air movement services, which includes a long-term African growth strategy.

“Working together opens a doorway to a broader local and international client base . . . all the companies involved will benefit from a larger marketing and services footprint, with global support infrastructure from TLT-Turbo and its parent company, Power China Corporation.”

Power China is a Fortune 200 company, which services many of the same markets on which TLT-Turbo focuses. The global auxiliary fan product range is based on MechCaL’s innovative solutions and will complement the current TLT-Turbo range.

Redinger, who has also been appointed as director and chairperson on the boards of MechCaL and TLT ACTOM, further emphasises that TLT-Turbo will have one management team to foster integration and realise synergies between the company’s operations in South Africa, with the first step being the appointment of one MD and financial manager for both companies.

Global Footprint

This will also help to extend TLT-Turbo’s global footprint and the supply of MechCaL’s other advanced composite products.

According to recently appointed MechCaL and TLT ACTOM MD Luther Erasmus, MechCaL has been rebranded for the purposes of global and regional distribution of its products and will now be known as TLT MechCaL.

“This rebranding is essential to demonstrate TLT-Turbo’s commitment to the company’s product range and its financial backing to internationalise the range and exploit the synergies between the two companies’ combined technology portfolios to offer superior and quality ventilation solutions.”

Erasmus explains that MechCaL and TLT ACTOM will collaborate closely to develop the market in the sub-Saharan Africa region, offering a complete range of fans – from auxiliary to large surface fans – for applications in the mining industry and a broad range of industrial ventilation and process solutions.

The TLT-Turbo range of fans is supplied to the sub-Saharan Africa market by TLT ACTOM, while the MechCaL auxiliary fan product range will be sold in South Africa and the sub-Saharan Africa region under the TLT MechCaL brand and internationally under the TLT-Turbo brand, Erasmus says.

“TLT MechCaL will also form part of TLT-Turbo’s globalisation roadmap and play a key role as a composites competence centre for the TLT-Turbo group. TLT MechCaL has already developed products and started shipping to the global market,” he adds.

TLT ACTOM operations director Craig Johnston states that combining world-class German technology with local African knowledge presents a “formidable” offering, as TLT ACTOM will expand its well-developed footprint in the mining industry to include the innovative TLT MechCaL auxiliary mine fan range.

This will lead to TLT MechCaL and TLT ACTOM expanding their projects, service and manufacturing facilities over time to support the expected growth in the mining industry and other industrial applications. “It is very important for TLT ACTOM to offer routine maintenance services on TLT-Turbo’s new and installed fleet, such as the 36 large induced draft fans at [power utility Eskom’s] Majuba, Medupi and Kusile power stations, as well as on TLT MechCaL’s range of auxiliary fans,” Johnston asserts.

He says one of the greatest benefits to clients is the access to and sourcing of key technologies within the TLT-Turbo group of companies.

“This agreement represents each organisation’s strong commitment to providing customers with one source for the best in ventilation,” Johnston concludes.
