US-based boiler company Nationwide Boiler announced in March the sale of five 650 hp mobile boiler rooms to a US federal government facility.

The high-pressure, ultralow nitrogen-oxide (NOx) boilers will be used to replace the federal facility’s existing coal-fired steam plant, which required major retrofitting to comply with the country’s Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standard for boilers.

Nationwide Boiler partnered with their local representative and met directly with the customer to gain a clear understanding of the site, the unique facility requirements and the critical role that the equipment would serve in this significant project.

The boiler room system specifications included modular, self-contained boiler rooms, industry-standard control systems, dual-fuel firing capabilities with ultralow NOx emissions, and boiler MACT compliance. The boilers also needed to adhere to stringent government quality standards. In addition, delivery speed, installation and start-up were also critical factors that favoured Nationwide Boiler.

The company proposed that five mobile boiler rooms would satisfy the project’s requirements and, after a thorough internal quality control and inventory control review process, Nationwide Boiler met the customer’s requirements and was awarded the sale for the steam project.

The boilers will be customised by Nationwide Boiler to meet the specific needs of the application, and a control and installation strategy has been developed to enable all five boilers to operate at full capacity as a single cohesive steam plant.

A comprehensive predelivery testing procedure will be performed at Nationwide Boiler’s headquarters, in Fremont, California, to demonstrate operational performance.

The project is currently on schedule and the five mobile boiler rooms are expected to be delivered, installed and on line by mid-2015.

Nationwide Boiler has provided solutions to meet the temporary and permanent boiler system needs of its customers for almost 50 years. The company offers a complete line of low NOx boilers, mobile rental units, exclusive EconoStak economisers for fuel efficiency, CataStak Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) retrofits for 2.5 parts per million (ppm) compliance, and boiler-related equipment for rental, short term, seasonal and emergency use. This equipment is also for sale.

Large Trailer-Mounted Boiler
Meanwhile, Nationwide Boiler reported in January that it had designed and developed the world’s first 110 000 lb/hr trailer-mounted, high-pressure superheat mobile boiler.

Currently being manufactured by energy products and services company Babcock & Wilcox, in West Point, Mississippi, this package watertube boiler is designed at 750 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) and 398 °C superheat. It is the largest trailer-mounted superheat boiler available from the company.

This boiler is capable of producing superheated steam at a pressure of between 400 psig and 650 psig, when supplied with feedwater at a temperature of 108 °C. It is designed to burn natural gas with a future option of firing No 2 oil.

Further, the boiler and trailer are high- way-legal, allowing for immediate ship- ment in North America, pending permit approval.

Nationwide Boiler sales and marketing VP Larry Day was integral in getting this product developed. He says Nationwide Boiler is excited to introduce yet another industry first to the industrial boiler rental business.

“[This] superheat trailer-mounted boiler will give customers with higher, superheated steam capacity requirements the opportunity to [take advantage of] quick delivery on rental equipment during planned and unplanned outages.

“The ability to ship this large boiler by truck instead of by rail is a great time-saving advantage, especially during the current railroad capacity challenges and shipping delays.”

The trailer-mounted boiler includes a low NOx burner, EconoStak economiser and a fully metered cross-limited control system with a variable frequency drive-driven 300 hp fan.

For users requiring ultralow NOx emissions of 5 ppm, Nationwide Boiler’s CataStak SCR system can be supplied. The completed unit will initially be stored at Babcock & Wilcox’s manufacturing facility and is available for rental or sale worldwide.
