Turnstile streamlines access control and alcohol detection
A newly designed turnstile system integrates access control with alcohol detection, simplifying the process of screening employees when entering a premises.
The full-height turnstile allows for controlled access by means of fingerprint, card, face recognition or other parameters and also simultaneously checks an employee’s breath alcohol level.
The unit operates like a normal turnstile, allowing an employee to walk freely into the turnstile, but it then locks automatically at the halfway point. The employee is then required to present identification by means of biometrics or access card and is also required to blow into a breathalyser. Only once both alcohol level and access is verified, will the turnstile unlock to allow the employee access onto the workplace property. If alcohol is detected by the breathalyser or if biometrics or an access card is not verified, the turnstile will not unlock and access will be denied.
The so-called “Alky” turnstile from Flow Systems was recently installed at an abattoir, to ensure that employees are not able to enter the workplace if they are under the influence of alcohol.
Sanitisers may also be added to the system, to ensure that employees sanitise hands before entering and upon leaving through the turnstile. The turnstile assists employers in complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which states that an employee may not enter a workplace if they are under the influence of alcohol and employers are under obligation to ensure that the workplace is safe for workers.
