With a focus on pursuing additional market sectors, such as the aerospace industry, last month, heat-treating company Diamond Heat Treat purchased a TITAN H6 vacuum furnace with six-bar gas quenching to expand its capabilities.

The TITAN H6 vacuum furnace is one of industrial vacuum and atmosphere heat-treating systems designer and manufacturer Ipsen’s modular heat- treatment systems.

Diamond Heat Treat – acquired by Maryland-based private-equity firm Calvert Street Capital Partners – already has three vacuum furnaces at their Rockford, Illinois, facility. However, the new TITAN furnace’s range of process capabilities allows Diamond Heat Treat to better address key needs for different markets. “This addition of technical capabilities is in line with our strategy of partnering with family-owned thermal processing companies and then investing in both people and equipment to enable profitable growth,” says Diamond Heat Treatment thermal processing strategy CEO Mike Sobieski.

The TITAN features a 36" × 48" × 36" (915 mm × 1 220 mm × 915 mm) work zone with a 3 000 lb (1 361 kg) load capacity. This furnace is also capable of operating at temperatures of 1 000 ºF to 2 400 ºF (538 ºC to 1 316 ºC) with ±10 ºF (±6 ºC) temperature uniformity.

TITAN is available in several sizes with horizontal or vertical configurations, nitrogen or argon quench and graphite or all-metal hot zone construction. It incorporates a high-definition display with a touch screen; supports a variety of standard processes, including hardening, annealing, tempering and brazing; and is capable of meeting applicable AMS 2750, Nadcap and MedAccred requirements.

In comparison to conventional vacuum furnaces, TITAN uses about 40% less floor space, and its compact design allows for ease of installation. Further, when compared with conventional vacuum furnaces, it delivers lower costs for every part by featuring high-efficiency components and using 20% less quench gas. TITAN is capable of operating in 20-plus languages.

Ipsen’s TITAN vacuum heat-treating systems provide an advanced solution, owing to its ability to deliver a power performance, cutting-edge technology and immediate delivery.

Built on a legacy of innovation, both experienced and first-time heat treaters rely on the TITAN for powerful performance.

The TITAN vacuum furnace comes complete with Ipsen’s PdMetrics software platform for predictive maintenance and incorporates years of customer feedback to deliver improved, user-friendly features, all while maintaining a global platform, small footprint and short delivery times.

Ipsen’s PdMetrics software platform for predictive maintenance monitors the furnace in real time, providing advance diagnostics and alerts when action is required, which improves the health and integrity of the equipment.

Further to being an equipment manufacturer, Ipsen also offers expert-driven solutions for customers’ needs through all stages of the system’s life cycle, no matter the location – whether it is facilitating on-site installation, providing expert training and start-up assistance or delivering responsive field support and spare parts.

In this vein, in addition to this purchase, Diamond Heat Treat will also rely on Ipsen to provide local, hands-on support for installation, start-up supervision and personnel training.

Ipsen Investment

Ipsen is investing one-million dollars in the heat-treating industry by offering $50 000 credits towards the purchase of new TITAN furnaces, the company also announced last month.

Ipsen believes that one of the most valuable things a company can do is invest in others. Further, the company is also committed to advancing the heat-treating industry with the latest innovations and updated equipment. This investment forms part of this commitment by the company.

Companies can take advantage of Ipsen’s investment by trading in their old furnace to receive a $50 000 credit toward the purchase of a new TITAN vacuum furnace – this applies to the 2017 list price of any TITAN model. The TITAN vacuum furnace comes complete with PdMetrics.

Ipsen will accept a trade in of any brand heat-treating furnace (vacuum or atmosphere) in any condition. To receive this credit, transactions must take place by October 31, and the new TITAN furnace will be shipped from Ipsen’s facility by December 31.

It is Ipsen’s hope that this investment results in future growth and innovations – both for customers and for the industry as a whole.

Worldwide Support

With a focus on providing advanced equipment and comprehensive support to industries around the world, Ipsen USA also recently shipped eight of its vacuum heat-treating systems to customers in Costa Rica, India, Germany and the US, the company announced in April. This equipment will be used to support the additive manufacturing, aerospace, medical, metal injection moulding and tooling industries. Several customers also took advantage of Ipsen’s full-scale support offerings, including Ipsen U training, spare parts kits and installation.

The vacuum furnaces shipped included a vertical MetalMaster furnace with a 5 000-pound (2 268 kg) capacity; a custom-built furnace for debinding and sintering; horizontal MetalMaster and TurboTreater furnaces; a TITAN DS (debinding and sintering) furnace; and several H2- and H6-sized TITAN vacuum furnaces equipped with the PdMetrics software platform for predictive maintenance.

To best support these industries, Ipsen’s global Ipsen customer service team will facilitate system installations, as well as provide expert training, start-up assistance and 360º support throughout the entire life span of the equipment for any brand, as required.
