The Industry Transition: A Pathway to Decarbonising the Hard-to-Abate
The hard to abate sectors currently produce more than a third of the worlds’ climate chaining emissions, which we must sharply curtail if we are to hold global warming to 1.5ºC.
Yet, they are integral to humanity and ultimately they ’re playing an integral role in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and other emissions producers.
Successful decarbonisation of heavy industry would represent a significant step towards achieving net zero globally, but more research and development is needed to prove the feasibility of the tools that will enable this. Not just for the industry sectors themselves, but also for the investors who will help them make the transition and the regulators who must know the new methods still produce the reliable goods society depends upon.
Critically, heavy industry is having to abandon old ways of production and quickly re-strategise and develop new technologies.
The news is aswarm every day with the latest in renewable energy and electric vehicles, but there are still so many parts of our industrialised world producing the greenhouse gasses (GHGs) that are accelerating climate change.
Reuters Events’ latest whitepaper aims to review some of the most efficient ways of removing these GHGs from heavy industry and chart the path towards net zero for the hard to abate.

Key Themes Include:
- Electrifying the decarbonization of mining
- Getting CO2 out of cement
- Decarbonizing long-haul transportation
- Electrification and Recycling being key to net zero metal production
The hard to abate sectors represent a new frontier of opportunities to reduce and ultimately eliminate their emissions.
These industries are starting to make changes but to prevent the direst consequences of climate change, they must move faster to abate their emissions.
Reuters Events’ latest whitepaper aims to review some of the most efficient ways of reducing these emissions and chart the path towards net zero.
