New York City is world-renowned as the city that never sleeps. As it emerged as the epicentre of the US Covid-19 pandemic, however, the city took on a decidedly less frenzied character. Pictured here is a person wearing a protective mask and riding a skateboard in the Times Square neighbourhood, which would normally be teeming with people. Similar scenes are playing themselves out across major cities around the world, including in South Africa, which has instituted a 21-day lockdown in response to the virus.
