The National Treasury and the Department of Small Business Development are jointly convening a Metro Township Economic Development (TED) Symposium on August 18 and 19.

The Metro TED Symposium will focus on forging the necessary public, private, civil society and donor partnerships around evidenced-based metro priorities and interventions for the development and revitalisation of their townships and well-located industrial spaces.

It is believed that a coordinated and focused action will increase collective impact and, in this way, address some of the persistent challenges that have yet to be tackled.

The symposium aims to strengthen intergovernmental relationships in respect of programmes and policies that directly contribute towards township economic development and industrial park revitalisation across all spheres; as well as share knowledge and learning on effective strategies to fast-track township economic development and industrial park revitalisation, including the role of evidence and data, partnerships and transversal collaboration.

In addition, the symposium will aim to strengthen existing partnerships and foster new partnerships among government, donors, business development service providers and the private sector in support of township economic development and industrial park/space revitalisation.

With irreversible processes of urbanisation under way within South Africa, townships and informal settlements are considered to be the entry point for many.

However, the experience is one of living environments that are spatially fragmented from the rest of the city, with infrastructure and service delivery backlogs or decay, high levels of poverty, tenure insecurity and unemployment, and many localised and competing microentrepreneurs or survivalist enterprises.
