The R148-million road upgrade between Stellenbosch arterial road and Polkadraai road in Kuilsrivier is expected to be completed in September.

Construction started in October 2013, following urgent repairs required on the main road between the Strand/Van Riebeeck road intersection and the Polkadraai dual carriageway in the direction of Stellenbosch.

The M12, which carried over 15 000 vehicles a day, was upgraded at the same time. It was last refurbished in May 1991.

Completed works included a new carriageway, new street lighting, upgraded storm water works, rehabilitation of the Kuilsrivier river bridge and the protection and relocation of various utility services.

Work in progress included the rehabilitation of the existing carriageway, upgrading of traffic signals, new sidewalks, railway bridge rehabilitation and remedial works, such as storm water works and measures to control erosion.

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works created a significant number of employment opportunities through the project – a total of 24 130 paid person-days, with R26.8-million invested in targeted empowerment enterprises in the province and R4.7-million in emerging contractor development.
