Steel strapping enhances conventional tyrewall barrier
From Creamer Media in Johannesburg this is the Real Economy Report
Sashnee Moodley:
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit’s novel approach to tyrewall barrier assembly is owed largely to steel strapping products from stainless steel manufacturer and Band It product distributor, Banding & Identification Solutions Africa.
Nadine James tells us more.
Nadine James:
Kyalami’s General Maintenance Manager Marius Swart explains that track – built in 1961 – was recently bought by Porsche South Africa CEO Toby Venter, and is currently subject to a multimillion-rand upgrade and expansion project.
Kyalami General Maintenance Manager Marius Swart:
Nadine James:
The Kyalami management team researched various tyrewall assembly methods in an effort to improve driver safety, and attain a grade two licence from the motorsport governing body International Federation of Automobiles, or FIA. The grade two licence will allow Kyalami to host any form of international track racing, with the exception of Formula One. Swart says that, in terms of safety, cost and availability, Banding & Identification Solutions Africa offered the most viable tyrewall solution.
Kyalami General Maintenance Manager Marius Swart:
Nadine James:
The stainless steel bands, which were 16 mm wide and 0.5 mm thick, were strapped around the tyres at 90 angles, in order to facilitate the tyre’s compression, while ensuring that the tyres were tightly secured.
Banding sales representative Bertie Ferreira says that this was one of the biggest strapping installations that the company has ever worked on, noting that thousands of stainless steel products were used for this project.
Banding Sales Rep Bertie Ferreira:
Nadine James:
The installation team, which comprised of 16 Kyalami staff members, made use of 14 Band It Bantam Strapping Tools – easy to use, light-weight tensioning devices designed specifically for strapping applications.
Banding Sales Rep Bertie Ferreira:
Nadine James:
Kyalami intends to keep a few Bantam tools and strapping on hand for quick repairs, once the track is fully-operational. Ferreira expects that the track will continue its relationship with Banding and Band It because of their products superior quality, and longevity.
