Steel production up 5.4% y/y in May

Global crude steel production increased by 5.4% year-on-year to 162.7-million tonnes in May, the World Steel Association (worldsteel) reported on Monday.

Its data shows that China's crude steel output had increased by 10% year-on-year to 89.1-million tonnes in May, while India's output had increased by 5.1% year-on-year to 9.2-milliion tonnes.

Japan's output fell by 4.6% year-on-year to 8.7-million tonnes, but South Korea's production increased by 2.2% to 6.4-million tonnes.

Meanwhile, Italy’s crude steel production increased by 1.1% year-on-year to 2.2-million tonnes. France's output of 1.2-million tonnes was 7.6% lower than that produced in May 2018, while Spain's steel production decreased by 7.1% year-on-year to 1.3-million tonnes.

Turkey produced 3.1-million tonnes of steel in May, an 8% year-on-year decrease.

The US produced 7.7-million tonnes of steel, a 5.4% year-on-year increase, while Brazil's steel output increased by 2.9% year-on-year to 2.8-million tonnes.

In Africa, Egypt's steel production increased by 19.8% year-on-year to 750 000 t, while South Africa's steel production decreased by 10.3% year-on-year to 510 000 t.
