Steel production up 4.1% y/y in February

Global crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) increased by 4.1% year-on-year to 150.2-million tonnes in February.

Worldsteel reports that China produced about 83-million tonnes of steel in February, a 10.9% year-on-year increase.

The combined steel production of the 27 member States of the European Union increased by 7.1% year-on-year to 11.9-million tonnes.

The only other countries to increase production were Turkey, with a 5.9% bump in production to three-million tonnes; Brazil with a 3.8% increase in output to 2.8-million tonnes; and Iran with an 11.5% increase in output to an estimated 2.3-million tonnes.

India’s steel production decreased by 3.1% year-on-year to 9.1-million tonnes in February; while Japan produced 5.6% less steel year-on-year, at 7.5-million tonnes.

The US’s production slipped by 10.9% to 6.3-million tonnes; while Russia produced 1.3% less steel year-on-year at 5.7-million tonnes.

South Korea produced 1.2% less steel year-on-year at 5.5-million tonnes; while Germany’s production slipped by 10.4% to 3.1-million tonnes.

Africa’s production decreased by 6.4% year-on-year to 1.2-million tonnes in February.
