With the support of a community of sponsors, the 38th Steel Awards were hosted for the first time as an exclusively virtual event on October 15, 2020, says the South African Institute for Steel Construction (SAISC) MD Denise Sherman.

In a previous article by Engineering News she commented that “hosting an online event helps us to celebrate the industry’s achievements. It also opens the event up to a potentially larger and more geographically widespread audience”.

Further, SAISC explains that the overarching statement that guided the judges is how well the project illustrate what can be achieved with steel. Some of the important factors that were considered include, the importance of steel as a structural component in the project, the benefits of using steel, aesthetic appeal, environment consideration and innovation & design.

Categories are determined based on the type of entries received. Projects are allocated and judged based on the categories requested by the nominator.

The categories included Overall Winner; Bridge; Architectural; Industrial; Association of Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturers Tubular; Metal Cladding; Factory and Warehouse; Export; and Safal Steel Innovation and Sustainability.
