The establishment of a single national accreditation system was approved by Cabinet in 1994 and was registered as a Section 21 company in January 1996 and officially launched in August 1996.

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed with the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) in December 1997 to formalise the relationship with Government. Through which SANAS is now recognised as the single national authority for accreditation. In 2006 SANAS became a public entity through the promulgation of the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act 19 of 2006.

SANAS’ mandate is to provide accreditation support for industrial development and the protection of the health and safety of the public and the South African environment; promote acceptance of results issued by SANAS-accredited organisations nationally and amongst global partners, and to support regional integration and relations to advance industry policy and trade and economic development objectives.

As we look back at dawn of democracy in 1994 with utmost pride, SANAS envisions an excellent future for all South Africans.
