Aquatic ecologist Dr Jackie King has been named the 2019 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate, by the Stockholm International Water Institute, for her contributions to global river management.

Together with colleagues, King created methods to demonstrate ecological and social implications of damming and de-watering rivers and, through her work, she has advanced the scientific understanding of water flows, giving decision-makers tool to assess the real costs and benefits of river system development.

She led the development of the tools as a researcher at the University of Cape Town and then as an honorary professor at the University of the Western Cape.

Speaking at the official opening of Stockholm World Water Week, King said that “we all lose if rivers become severely degraded [owing] to poorly-informed development and management”.

The nominating committee noted that King had, through science, dedication and effective advocacy, transformed the way people think and talk about and work with water.

King’s work also influenced South Africa’s 1998 National Water Act and is increasingly guiding governments and institutions across the globe, according to the statement on Tuesday.
