Together with companies such as SMS Meer, SMS Concast and Paul Wurth, SMS Siemag forms part of a strong global network of companies known as SMS group.

The SMS group supplies various processing plant, technology, equipment, components, spare parts and technical services for ferrous (both flat- and long-product manufacturing), nonferrous and ferroalloy manufacturing plants. The roots of the Weiss family company go back over 150 years. Integration of leading names such as Schloemann, Concast, MAN-GHH and Demag has played a key role.

It was established in South Africa in 1958. In 1973, Schloemann and Siemag merged, and in March 2009, SMS Demag reverted to the original name of SMS Siemag.

The company, which is headquartered in Dusseldorf and Hilchenbach, Germany, has local offices in Parktown, Johannesburg. Through its global footprint, SMS group has offices and workshop facilities in various countries, including Germany, Luxembourg, the US, China, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, India, Brazil, the Middle East, Taiwan, Russia and Ukraine.

SMS Siemag South Africa is 100%-owned by its parent company, SMS Siemag AG, which is 100%-owned by SMS Holding in Germany. In 2013, SMS group attracted an order intake of €3.3-billion and achieved sales of €3.5-billion.

The company’s quality management system is ISO 9001:2008- certified, while its occupational health and safety management system is BS OHSAS 18001:2007-certified.

SMS group employs more than 13 500 people worldwide, providing it with a diverse base of technical experts who can assist its clients with almost all their processing technology, equipment, and service requirements.

For new plants, the company provides clients with all phases of engineering, such as concept, prefeasibility, bankable feasibility and detail. It also provides manufacture, procurement, construction, project management and commissioning services.

SMS group follows a client-focused market approach. From South Africa, it provides support and services for all SMS group clients and chosen market sectors throughout the Southern African Development Community region and also further north along the east coast of Africa.
