To prove the efficiency of its S-tube impeller fitted in their sewerage S range, Denmark-based pumps manufacturer and pump components supplier Grundfos will install three of its S-tube impeller pumps at sewage and wastewater treatment plants in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape soon, says Grundfos South Africa marketing man- ager Lorraine Smart.

“Grundfos will install one new pump and let it run in conjunction with the remaining pump to compare the pump’s performance in South African wastewater treatment conditions for three months,” Smart explains.

Grundfos launched the sewerage tube impeller at the 2013 IFAT trade fair for water, sewage, waste and raw materials management as part of its “No Compromise” solution for waste- water treatment.

The S-tube impeller provides hydraulic efficiency of up to 84% without compromising free passage, including a spherical passage of up to 160 mm for better solids handling and greater clearance, resulting in better nonclogging capabilities. Additional features of the impeller include lower maintenance costs, Smart comments.

Another aim is to prove the energy efficiency of the Grundfos Blueflux energy efficiency or IE3 motor, which is installed in the pumps, she says.

The Grundfos Blueflux high-efficiency motor technology can reduce energy consumption and, therefore, reduce life cycle, she points out.

Further, she adds that Grundfos constan- tly adds new products and technology, which are needed in the market, to ensure that fresh ideas and technology are introduced, such as the energy efficiency motors that make a significant difference. “If there is new technology with pro-ven results of efficiency, industry and the country can benefit.”

While the company has sold several S-tube pumps, the company is still a relatively new player in the wastewater market, having pro- vided pumps and pump components to this local industry for about ten years.

However, she notes that the company is increasing its footprint in the industry, owing to increasing success in terms of more sales and awareness in wastewater, “becoming a force to reckon with in this space”, adding that Africa, as a relatively untapped market, has significant potential for growth in the water treatment and wastewater treatment industry.

Further, the company will launch the new generation of the Smart Digital dosing pump, which can be used in wastewater treatment app- lications, in the following months, this along with the newly developed BMS pump used in the reverse osmosis market

.

“Since the launch of the Smart Digital dosing pump two-and-a-half years ago, this pump has become more pop- ular, with sales increasing in the last year,” she says, attributing the increase to the pump’s easy installation and controls, as well as its dosing accuracy.

Meanwhile, Smart says the company is waiting to commission the fine bubble aeration system, which is installed at the wastewater treatment plant in Bellville, in the Western Cape which should be within the next few months.

The system was fitted to the bottom of a wastewater tank, as it was the most energy efficient method of water aeration, Grundfos South Africa MD Jonathan Hamp-Adams told Engineering News last year. The diffused aeration system blows fine bubbles into the water, forcing oxygen into it to improve the quality of the water and kill bacteria, he said.
