The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has allocated R1.2-billion to be invested on road maintenance and construction projects in the town of Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement session on November 25, Sanral regional manager Mbulelo Peterson said the agency was open to working with small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) to help realise economic prosperity in the area.

One of the projects in the town includes the rehabilitation of National Route R56, Section 8, which spans from Matatiele to the KwaZulu-Natal boundary.

The project will entail the refurbishment of the Mzimvubu bridge, the reconstruction of the Matatiele Bridge 3 and Edendale Farm stream bridge, the construction of new cattle underpasses and the construction of pedestrian sidewalks in Matatiele and Cedarville.

“Our local SMMEs and residents must benefit from the upcoming projects. As local government we welcome that. We desire that the lives of our people change for the better, with immediate effect,” noted Matatiele mayor Sonwabile Mngenela.
