Heeding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for essential services to continue operations during the lockdown announced in response to the Covid-19 outbreak, opencast mining operation Rossmin has registered as an essential services provider and continues to supply calcium additives to the food, animal feed and agricultural industries,

Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart. Adults require 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day.

Calcium Carbonate is a vital source of calcium for humans, animals and plants. When used as a food additive, Calcium Carbonate acts as an anti-caking agent, an added source of calcium and a white food colourant. It is also a nutrient for yeasts, an acid reducer and a firming agent, Calcium Carbonate can also stabilize and thicken some products, and is used to strengthen dough. Calcium Carbonate is in baking powder, dry-mix dessert mixes, dough and wine.

Rossmin produces a Food Grade Calcium Additive fit for human consumption compliant with Food Grade Certificate No.: COA/94-2019 (Act 54 of 1972, Reg 638) and has implemented a FOOD Safety Management System based on “SANS22000_2019_Ed2: Food safety management systems ― Requirements for any organization in the food chain. (ISO 22000:2018)”. Rossmin food grade additive is Halaal certified.

Established in 2010, Rossmin mines the high-quality limestone deposit Marble Delta near Port Shepstone, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The company uses the most advanced systems to process the minerals to produce high-quality products for various markets.

Rossmin also contributes to the upliftment of previously disadvantaged people through the Rossmin Social and Labour plan and has made the local community surrounding its operations shareholders in its business.

In addition, the company endeavours to limit its impact on the surrounding environment through good governance practices over the life of the mine.

To ensure the health and safety of its operations team, Rossmin is taking every precaution to provide staff with the support and tools they need to continue operations during this Covid-19 risk period.
