Name of the Project
Rooppur nuclear power plant (NPP).

Location
Ishwardi Upazilla, 160 km from Dhaka, in Bangladesh.

Project Owner/s
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).

Project Description
The Rooppur NPP will comprise two WWER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2 400 MW.

Potential Job Creation
About 4 200 people are engaged in construction works.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of the first unit started in November 2017 and will be commissioned in 2023.

The second unit started construction in July 2018 and is expected to be commissioned in 2024.

Latest Developments
The Volgodonsk Branch of AEM-technology (part of the mechanical engineering division of Rosatom – Atomenergomash) has started shipping the equipment for the reactor plant.

The reactor pressure vessel and first two steam generators for Unit 2 of the Rooppur project will travel from the Volgodonsk branch of AEM-Technology JSC, in Russia, to the construction site in Bangladesh.

The nuclear reactor took two years to build and the manufacturing process comprises 768 operations, including 143 control points. The plant's specialists conducted the whole range of testing, including a hydraulic test of the vessel with the standard cover of the upper unit. During the test, the maximum pressure (24.5 MPa), which is 1.4 times higher than the operating pressure, was created inside the reactor.

The final stage of the equipment manufacturing is test assembly with the internals. The core barrel, core baffle and the protective tube unit were installed into the reactor vessel in the design position. The plant's specialists, along with the customer's representatives, performed the necessary inspections. As a result, all geometric parameters and the alignment of the components have been checked; the quality of the manufactured item has been confirmed.

The 12-m-long reactor, which weighs 320 t, and two 14-m-long 340 t steam generators,  will be brought to the plant's special berth and loaded onto a barge. The equipment will be delivered to Novorossiysk by water, from where it will be sent to Bangladesh 14 000 km by sea.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
AtomStroyExport – Rosatom’s engineering division (general construction contractor); Atomenergomash – Rosatom’s machine building division (equipment for the reactor island and auxiliary equipment for the turbine island).

Various divisions of Rosatom are in charge of manufacturing reactor vessels, steam generators, pumps, heat-exchangers and other equipment.
