ROAD TO RUIN: Protests that were initially sparked by opposition to the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma, but then morphed into a deadly looting spree by criminals and desperate opportunists alike, once again exposed South Africa’s socioeconomic fault lines. Without question, the restoration of law and order had to be the first priority, but the country won’t avoid the ‘road to ruin’ on display in this image without a well-supported strategy for reigniting growth and ensuring that the economic benefits are more evenly shared.
