The Richards Bay Bulk Terminal, in KwaZulu-Natal, loaded 1.49-million tons of cargo in September, exceeding its monthly target of 1.32-million tons, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) said on Monday.

TPT said the reaching of vessel targets ahead of deadline created capacity for the export section to handle more vessels and greater volumes being shipped contributed to this achievement, while the import section also performed well.

“Teamwork yields good results. An improvement of availability of equipment and the contribution by the operators driving these machines has brought dynamic results. The investment in our human capital is starting to pay off as we are seeing perfection in our operational efficiencies,” Richards Bay Bulk Terminal manager Mandla Mpungose said.

During the month, the terminal averaged a gross vessel loading rate of 905 t/h, with some vessels having averaged 1 300 t/y, while the quick turnaround of wagons at the tipplers also contributed to the bulk performance.

On September 20, specifically, a total of 571 wagons were offloaded in a 24-hour period, translating into 24 wagons an hour, TPT pointed out.

“Our employees have shown a great deal of commitment. They have been consistent in the performance output. We want to sustain our current performance and make sure that we achieve our targeted volumes,” Mpungose concluded.
