Pulp and paper producer Sappi has launched its second-generation renewable sugar extraction demonstration plant at its Ngodwana mill, in Mpumulanga. The plant has been built in partnership with Finnish pulp and paper technology supplier Valmet and will explore and improve the extraction of biorenewable chemicals. Pictured at the ribbon cutting ceremony in April are Ngodwana Mill manager SW Engelbrecht, Sappi manufacturing and technical director Patrick McGrady, Sappi biotech leader Louis Kruyshaar, Sappi CEO Alex Thiel, Valmet pulp and energy business line president Bertel Karlstedt and Sappi technology head Andrea Rossi.
