R63 national road project to Amahlathi.

Location
The R63 national road project spans the municipalities of Buffalo City and Amahlathi, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

Project Description
Sanral plans to improve the R63 from Bhisho to the N6 national road bridge intersection.

The scope of work includes the dualling of sections of the R63, improvement of the existing road alignment and pavement structure, as well as the construction of new hydraulic structures, community access roads, pedestrian walkways and streetlights.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create 200 jobs for the local community. About 60 small-, medium-sized and microenterprises are also expected to benefit from the project. Up to 30% of the contract will be awarded to targeted enterprises or subcontractors. Packages for the targeted enterprises will include fencing, minor contract works, gabions, guard rails and site security, besides others.

Capital Expenditure
R750-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to take 36 months to complete.
