Hardly had Qatar Airways, the national flag carrier of Qatar, announced that it was resuming outbound passenger flights from South Africa, than it has had to postpone their implementation. These flights would have been from both Johannesburg and Cape Town.

“Due to operational reasons, Qatar Airways has unfortunately had to postpone the restart of outbound passenger services from South Africa for a short period of time,” said the airline in a statement received by Engineering News Online on Monday. “We apologise to our customers and recommend they contact their travel agent or visit [the airline website] for further information.”

On Friday, the airline had announced that it was going to restart outbound passenger flights from South Africa on Sunday. There would have been one flight daily between Cape Town and Doha (the capital of Qatar) and two flights daily between Johannesburg and Doha. All of these services would have been operated with Boeing 777 widebody airliners.

In its latest statement, Qatar gave no indication of just how short the period of the postponement would be. Although the airline did not cease operating to South Africa, it has been and currently remains unable to carry South African travellers on its flights out of the country.
