This year’s biennial Food & Drink Technology Africa (fdt Africa) trade fair will take place over three days, enabling visitors to meet more industry players and decision-makers.

Scheduled to take place at the Gallagher Convention Centre, in Midrand, from September 4 to 6, event organisers Messe München South Africa senior exhibition manager Dain Richardson hopes that the extended event will increase visitor numbers from about 1 500 in 2016 to more than 2 000 this year. The trade fair has been extended by a day, compared with its being a two-day event in 2016.

“The fair is a platform to create awareness and encourage investment in the local food and beverage industry, through connecting local and international suppliers. As an international organiser, we have benefited from the international willingness to invest into our show.”

This year’s key sponsor of the Speakers Corner, German food and beverage education specialist Doemens Academy, has worked with fdt Africa to line up a list of speakers from the industry to address audiences.

The event will host speakers such as Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela – South Africa’s first black woman master brewer and brewery owner – who will speak on the African tasting experience. The water efficiency topic, Saving water technology and energy, will be covered by German food and beverage machinery association Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau (VDMA) speaker Vera Fritsche.

Fermentation solutions supplier Fermentis MD Stephane Meulemans will also be part of the line-up with a discussion on active dry yeast being a viable solution, and tips on its implementation for the brewing process. Additionally, engineering company Bosch Packaging will conduct a symposium at the Speakers Corner on September 5.

“Our Speakers Corner gives exhibitors and key industry players the opportunity to present directly to the audience of fdt Africa,” says Richardson.

This year’s fair will also include the judging phase of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) African Beer Awards, taking place on September 4 and 5. The winner will be announced at an event hosted by IBD Africa on the evening of September 5.

Next year’s fdt Africa fair is scheduled to be co-located with the analytical Lab Africa and IFAT Africa events in early July.

“Africa is a continuously evolving market, and fdt Africa is the premier platform for the Southern African food, beverage and packaging industries,” concludes Richardson.
