A new cloud-based tool is designed to give businesses the digital resources needed to get a 360-degree view of their carbon footprint.

Global customer relationship management (CRM) company Salesforce has introduced the Salesforce Sustainability Cloud Scope 3 Hub to help companies streamline the tracking of supply chain carbon footprint data, enabling business to effectively engage with suppliers to align sustainability efforts.

The company explains that previous supply chain carbon accounting methods could entail a multi-month process using incomplete data tracked on complex spreadsheets. It asserts that, in contrast, its new solution allows the process to be completed  in less than a day.

“To rise and meet the climate emergency head on, we need more than pledges. Companies must take action immediately to change the way they do business, including collaborating more deeply with suppliers for climate action,” says Salesforce sustainability VP Patrick Flynn. “We put transformational digital tools in the hands of companies to give them a 360-degree view of their carbon footprint so they can take meaningful action across their supply chain and reach net zero, faster."

Salesforce further highlights that an effective climate strategy requires that all emissions must be considered and accounted for in a company’s carbon emissions portfolio and in order to ensure a successful reduction strategy, all the data must be clear and trustworthy.

Scope 3 emissions in Salesforce Sustainability Cloud are captured and visualised within the same platform that currently calculates Scope 1 emissions (the direct emissions from owned and operated assets) and Scope 2 emissions (those associated with the purchase of electricity, heat, or cooling for a company’s own use). This is designed to provide a single source of truth for emissions data.

The solution includes a number of key functionalities, such as:

  • A commonly used emission factors dataset from the US Environmental Protection Agency while also allowing for the inclusion of a company-specific emission factors dataset
  • Fast and simple to track, providing a simple process of matching spending categories to spend-based emission factors and to Scope 3 categories — all a company needs is its procurement or spending data. The results can be rolled up and summarised by spend type (such as business travel and the purchase of goods and services) and by vendor. It also supports procurement data and emission factors data in any currency
  • In addition to capturing scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, Sustainability Cloud can track historical and real-time environmental, social and governance data on the same platform, allowing companies to have a 360-degree view of investor-grade data and support best practices in impact disclosures.

Salesforce asserts that its solution enables companies to ensure a sustainable supply chain through customer-supplier relationships, helping businesses to make a meaningful difference to climate change.
