The inaugural Electricity Forum will be held between September 28 and 30 and will kick off a multi-stakeholder drive to turn the country’s multiple power challenges into opportunities to spur growth, investment and jobs.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Manufacturing Circle, which has partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), to bring to fruition the one-of-a-kind initiative to boost manufacturing by catalysing the initiatives required to tackle the country’s crippling electricity constraints.

Manufacturing Circle chairperson Ayanda Mngadi says the country’s energy crisis contains the seeds of an “unprecedented opportunity”, but stressed that the opportunity “would be of limited duration” as there is “no time to waste”.

The two-day event will include four workshops focused on how State-owned power utility Eskom can be turned around; how South Africa can generate sufficient electricity; how the country can move purposefully and equitably towards renewables; and how business can benefit from the process of transforming and decarbonising electricity.

To promote understanding of South Africa’s electricity crisis, risks and opportunities – and to encourage participation in the Electricity Forum – the Manufacturing Circle has launched a dedicated online discussion portal, www.mc-eskom.co.za
