JOHANNESBURG – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will meet the Chamber of Mines Friday for more talks to break the ongoing strike in the coal sector.

Thousands of NUM members in the coal sector downed tools on Sunday after negotiations for wage hikes reached a deadlock.

The union said in a statement late Thursday that it would meet the chamber Friday morning “for further coal sector negotiations”.

Already struggling with depressed coal prices the sector is already feeling the effects of the strike. Operations at Anglo Coal, Glencore and Exxaro Coal have been affected, but there was no indication of a settlement on the cards.
