Measurement and control instrumentation supplier Krohne reports that it has introduced its new line of compact temperature sensors, in February, to follow the current trend in the industry, where temperature sensors in standard applications are replaced with compact ones, particularly in original- equipment manufacturer (OEM) applications.

“Unlike traditional sensors that have to be configured by choosing from various combinations of measuring insert, thermowell and transmitter, the compact sensors are preconfigured with an integrated transmitter to meet the most common requirements in terms of measuring range, immersion length, as well as process and electrical connections,” says Krohne’s website.

Its main advantage is its compact design, as in many process and OEM applications, there is only limited space for sensors.

Although the sensors are aimed at different fields of application, the Optitemp TRA-C10, TRA-C20 and TRA-C30 sensors share the same basic cylindrical design.

Equipped with Pt100 class A sensor elements and build-in analogue transmitters, it covers the temperature range from –50 °C to above 150 °C and an integrated transmitter of above 200 °C for liquid and gaseous mediums.

Accuracy of the sensors is about 0.15% of measuring range. For immediate use, the measuring range is fixed and preconfigured to a 4 mA to 20 mA output, and no programming is needed.

All three compact sensors come in standard immersion lengths of 50 mm or 100 mm. The short transmitter response time of the compact sensors also indicates changing process conditions quickly and enables for immediate reaction by giving a real-time reading.

Classed IP67/65 – which refers to protection against humidity, steam and dust, as well as resistance against mechanical destruction or unauthorised access – the sensors are dust tight and can be used in wet outdoor environments.
