Rotterdam-based fastener supplier McNetiq launched a new series of magnetic anchors for fall protection when working at height.

The first product in this series, released in July, is the workplace safety device McNetiq Fall Restraint, intended for workplaces constructed of steel without edge protection.

The operator is connected to this anchor with a measured working line so that the operator can never get past the unsecured edge.

Areas of application include loading and unloading work on ship decks, construction and demolition work on drilling platforms, shipbuilding and maintenance, and working on cranes and windmills.

This new application is based on Controlock technology.

McNetiq is the inventor of the Controlock patented technology, with which the breakout point and sheer force of a magnetic anchor can be determined in advance.

From the 2.3-million work-related fatalities a year globally, it is estimated that 27% are caused by falls.

Mandatory fall protection is required when working at a height of more than 1.2 m to 2.5 m, depending on circumstances.

The company explains that fall restraint is the process whereby a system prevents a worker from reaching an edge. On the other hand, fall arrest stops a worker in the process of a fall.

The company notes on its blog that it realised that when its clients understand the concepts of both systems, a huge difference for the clients’ business could be made.

Both concepts are essential to prevent accidents, yet the forces and extensiveness of processes vary. Understanding this difference can make it much easier to implement and safer to work. Further, it can significantly save costs.

In the circumstances where a hand railing is not available, the McNetiq Controlock anchors can be attached to lines to form a safe and secure basis for fall restraint purposes.

The McNetiq Fall Restraint System is based on using magnets connected to a lanyard with a harness to prevent the worker from reaching unsafe areas.

There are situations where fall arrest anchors cannot be connected by welding or using mechanical connections, then McNetiq Fall Arrest magnets with Controlock technology can be used to form a safe and secure anchor.

Controlock is used to prevent any free-falling; the magnet is connected to a lanyard with a harness and stopper.

A fall protection magnet anchor is a sustainable and dependable way to connect objects to steel construction without damaging the coating or the surface – however, material thickness, corrosion, and coating influence the magnet force.
