The Western Cape MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, on Tuesday welcomed Kenya Airways’ announcement about a new route that included Cape Town.

Winde said the route, which would see Kenya Airways fly a Nairobi-Livingstone-Cape Town route three times a week was wonderful news for the city and for South Africa.

He said the route would further cement Cape Town’s growing attractiveness as a destination city.

“This is great news for air access to our destination and it will no doubt contribute to growing tourism to our region.”

He thanked Kenya Airways for investing in Cape Town and said the new route was a testament to the hard work the Wesgro’s Air Access team had put into over the past few years as they worked on “developing a business case for a route to Kenya”. Wesgro is the Western Cape Investment and Trade Promotion Agency.

Winde added: “We will continue to drive direct flights to our region as part of Project Khulisa. Direct flights bring much needed tourists to our economy, driving jobs and growth.”

The Kenya Airways route would be effective from July 2016.
