The Wärtsilä Modular Block, a modular gas-fired generation system developed by industrial marine and energy equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä, can be rolled out on site within weeks, depending on the full scope of supply, says Wärtsilä Energy Business division engine power plants VP Antti Kämi.

The medium-speed 34SG gas-engine-generators solution can be expanded to accommodate increased energy demand and provides reliable, efficient, sustainable power generation.

The solution makes Wärtsilä’s advanced medium-speed engine technology available for applications where it would not typically be viable in a conventional custom-designed, permanent building, he highlights.

“Medium-speed engine technology has inherently higher efficiency and lower life-cycle costs than containerised high-speed engines or gas-turbine solutions,” says Kämi.

The Wärtsilä Modular Block’s enclosure also incorporates engine-specific auxiliary units. This means it can be delivered to site, including when clients need to expand their generation.

The Wärtsilä Modular Block can be offered as a full engineering, procurement and construction project. The solution is easily expandable and the concept allows for dismantling and relocation, which means it also offers new business models, such as power as a service or rentals, Kämi explains.

Additionally, the solution is easy to integrate with renewable energy and storage systems. It is also ideal for providing grid stability and balancing when integrating renewable-energy sources with intermittent production.

The flexibility of the concept enables expansion with minimal front-end investments, or relocation to accommodate changing power generation requirements. The high-efficiency system is configurable with external systems. It can be a perfect fit for industrial clients or utilities, and for independent power producers associated with them, he says.

Wärtsilä Energy Business is an energy system integrator that designs, builds and serves power systems. Its solutions provide flexibility to integrate renewables and provide a secure, reliable power system. It produces engine-based flexible power plants, including liquid gas systems, hybrid solar power plants, energy-management systems and storage and integration solutions.

“This modular block solution reflects our experience and know-how in prefabricated modular power plants, combining modularity and ease of use with superior medium-speed engine performance. It is a cost-effective solution that is configurable to different needs, scalable and redeployable, bringing fast and reliable power where needed,” concludes Kämi.
