Welding, rigging and construction equipment supplier Renttech South Africa, has launched a new, “one-of-a-kind” dual-purpose welder-generator unit to the local market.

The unit, which features a CE conformity marking for international safety standards, offers various industries, including the mining and manufacturing sectors, flexible and adaptable welding and standby power solutions.

The generators can, for example, meet on-site power generation and welding requirements, such as pipeline welding, specifically in environments that have unreliable power sources.

The dual-purpose unit is available in single and twin-pack models, says Renttech SA operations manager Martiens Opperman, adding that the models are sound-attenuated and fitted with Kubota Newage 1 500 rpm power packs that offer reliability and fuel efficiency.

“The single-pack welder-generator comprises one 300 A to 400 A welder (at coastal level), as well as a 20 kVA three-phase 50 Hz generator. It also features a 6 kVA /230 V power outlet for welding purposes that can be used for grinding and drilling, as well as lighting for night-time operations,” Opperman tells Engineering News.

In terms of power supply, the unit is fitted with a 20 kVA /380 V power outlet that meets the current South African Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) specifications, Opperman adds.

Meanwhile, the twin-pack welder-generator comprises two 300 A/400 A welding units, with a 30 kVA/three-phase 50 Hz power output. The two 6 kVA/230 V power outlets can also be used for grinding, drilling and lighting.

As a power source, the twin-pack model has a single 30 kVA/380 V power outlet that meets OHSA specifications.

Opperman highlights that both models have switches that control the required function of the unit, adding that customers can select, between standard or pipeline welding units that can easily be removed for servicing or replaced to eliminate downtime.

Further, the dual-purpose welder-generators dovetail with the company’s focus on offering solutions to contractors through the supply of high-quality, dual-purpose machines and equipment that significantly reduce cost, time, downtime and transport costs.

These solutions enable contractors to buy one machine instead of three or four units for different processes.

“The beauty with this particular unit is that its possible to operate two welding points from a single engine, which means there are massive operational savings,” says Renttech SA MD Gerrit van Zyl.

He adds that during the different phases of a typical greenfield project, the unit can function as an initial power-generation source to power offices and provide lighting and be converted into a welding unit.

“There is nothing available in the market place to compete with these units. This is a unique concept – a Renttech brainchild. We also offer a full backup service countrywide and into Africa,” Van Zyl concludes.
