Level 3 lockdown: Ramaphosa calls on companies to develop workplace plan

What employers need to consider when drafting their return to work strategies

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday evening announced that the whole of South Africa will enter Level three of the lockdown from 1 June 2020, which will ease a number of the initial lockdown regulations. Part of the eased regulations will see most sectors of the economy cleared for a gradual return to work.

In preparation for this, Ramaphosa also urged employers to develop a robust plan setting out clear procedures and protocols for the imminent return of staff to the workplace. He mentioned that companies would need to screen workers on arrival each day, quarantine those who may be infected, and make arrangements for them to be tested.

But Aadil Patel, Director and National Practice Head of the Employment practice at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr says that the considerations for employers are further reaching than just this. “Employers need to ensure that they observe strict health protocols and strictly adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. Employers have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their workers and this can be complex in the workplace. From entrance and exit issues via lifts and stairs, to distances between workstations and canteen protocols – the considerations are vast,” says Patel.
