Engineering and construction group Kentz has been awarded a project management consultancy services contract to oversee the commissioning of State-owned Transnet’s new multiproduct pipeline (NMPP).

The NMPP, a one-million-litres-an-hour pipeline designed to replace the existing Durban-to-Johannesburg pipeline, will transport multiple petroleum products from the Transnet coastal terminal at Island View, to the new inland terminal, in Heidelberg.

Transnet last year completed the first phase of the much-delayed project, with the second phase, which includes both the coastal and inland terminals, expected to be completed this year.

“It is satisfying that our international EPCM [engineering, procurement and construction management] profile has positioned Kentz to be selected to undertake significant consultancy scope on a project that is strategically important for both Transnet and South Africa,” said Kentz regional EPC business unit manager Paul Rebelo.

Kentz said it would provide integrated project management services and provide commissioning and construction technical support, engineering and design services, vendor project management, cold and hot commissioning procedures and planning and overall on-site execution of the completions.

The company had mobilised an integrated project management, engineering, completions and commissioning support team.
