One of the Johannesburg Development Agency’s (JDA’s) signature projects, the Jabulani node, has entered Phase 6B – the development of a community and recreational environment for people of all ages, including a Jabulani community facility and South African Football Association (SAFA) Safe Hub.

The City of Johannesburg on Tuesday confirmed in a statement that the Jabulani node was fast becoming a symbol of how catalytic intervention and strategic capital investments can unlock development potential, stimulate local economies and boost job creation and entrepreneurial development, especially in areas that have been previously marginsalised or that have failed to attract private investment.

The community facility will comprise a multipurpose hall with a basketball court, changing rooms and tiered seating, a library, counselling facilities, offices and meeting rooms which aligns with the JDA’s principle of creating public spaces that are creatively designed and move towards greater adaptability and multiplicity of use to ensure their longer-term sustainability.

The SAFA Safe Hub element of the building will comprise changing rooms, internal and external entertaining spaces, a kitchen and coffee bar, workshops, computer and information technology rooms, a training centre and other amenities.

The City of Johannesburg said Phase 6B’s development will supplement the various developments that have taken place so far, including the Jabulani Views residential apartments, Jabulani Mall, the Soweto Theatre and a 300-bed hospital, which are all located next to the main buss rapid transit route running through Soweto and connecting with Johannesburg’s central business district.
