African Energy Week (AEW), one of Africa’s premier events for the oil and gas sector, is proud to announce the signing of a partnership agreement with Ipieca, the global oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition.

As an official partner of AEW 2022 – Africa’s leading investment platform for the oil and gas sector which will take place from 18 – 21 October, 2022 in Cape Town – Ipieca will participate in panel discussions and drive dialogue around how Africa can sustainably scale up its oil and gas production in line with the Paris Agreement while also contributing to the region’s energy security.

Founded at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme in 1974, Ipieca brings together its members from across the full value chain with external stakeholders to develop and share good practice to support the industry to advance its climate action, environmental responsibility, social performance and integrate sustainability.

In February 2022, Ipieca, in partnership with the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) and the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), launched a new edition of its Flaring management guidance, which provides a framework for industry, government and regulators to reduce or eliminate routine flaring and instead use the gas as a sustainable energy resource.

In addition, the guidance provides recommendations on how government and regulators can incentivize the productive use of gas instead of flaring.

The Flaring management guidance can assist gas flaring African countries and emerging gas hubs in the region to adopt emissions-reductions practices while enhancing energy production.

During AEW, Ipieca will explain how its suite of guidance, tools and supporting materials can support companies of all sizes to support the increased energy demand needed for global prosperity while also lowering emissions, protecting nature and contributing to the host communities where they operate.

“Ipieca is proud to be a supporting partner of AEW. This event brings together the key players in the African energy industry with their counterparts in the global industry to work on scaling up the affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy essential to achieving the ambitions at the heart of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and ensure wellbeing and prosperity for all,” said Ipieca Executive Director Brian Sullivan.

“Collaboration between global oil and gas market associations has become a vital need to advance the energy transition, ensure it is just and that it addresses energy access, affordability and sustainability issues. This is what Africa needs and one of the reasons why AEW is partnering with an industry leader such as Ipieca. The partnership with Ipieca will help Africa to prioritize sustainable practices across the entire oil and gas value chain,” stated Tomas C. Gerbasio, Strategy and Business Development Director at African Energy Chamber (AEC), the voice of the African energy sector and organizers of AEW.

At AEW 2022, a delegation from Ipieca will participate in high-level meetings and in the NOC, Energy transition and Upstream forums to discuss measures African NOCs and players in the upstream sector can implement to advance environmental and social performance across the exploration and production of hydrocarbon resources.
