The Internet of Things (IoT) has unlocked massive potential for valves, piping and associated accessories maintenance providers to store vast amounts of data on behalf of clients, says industrial valves specialist Brimis Engineering technical director Moeketsi Mpotu.

He adds that Brimis Engineering intends to provide remote access for clients to witness valve testing and reduce the travel time for the client to attend the testing.

As a company that specialises in the fitment, maintenance and supply of valves, one of the opportunities that the company believes will be of particular interest is the risk-based maintenance of safety critical valves.

“This will enable clients to use remote sensing devices to determine when valves start to fail,” says Mpotu.

The company aims to establish a risk-based valve maintenance system with remote access for clients within the next 18 to 24 months, and to build an international-class repair and refurbishment facility in Middelburg, in Mpumalanga, with completion scheduled for within the next five years.

The Brimis Engineering Refurbishment Facility will house the latest technology for the engineering sector such as remote testing of valves, “google glasses” supported repairs, as well as fully automated valve and pump testing.

Risk-based maintenance using online monitoring of valve performance can be transferred to other mechanical systems like compressors and compressed air systems.

Mpotu mentions that clients will be able to use these tools and technologies to anticipate air leaks in systems, subsequently allowing for not only preventive maintenance but also the safety of people and machinery, as well as cost savings.

Brimis Engineering has sufficient technical capability and capacity to provide valve maintenance, installation and testing for the market, he concludes.
