Project Firebird comprises three near-term thermal coal projects (“the Firebird Projects”), two of which are located in South Africa’s established Springs-Witbank Coal Field (Gauteng Province) and one in the Highveld Coal Field (Mpumalanga Province). The Firebird Projects are strategically situated close to existing infrastructure, rail, selected Eskom coal-fired power stations and other domestic markets. The opportunity exists for interested parties to acquire the Firebird Projects as a package, or on an individual basis.

The Firebird Projects contain c. 323mt of thermal coal of which c. 110mt of the total classified reserves and resources have opencast potential with low strip ratios ranging between 1.5 and 4 bcm per tonne and c. 65mt is under Mining Authorisation Application. 39mt is classified as proven and probable reserves. To date two of the Firebird Projects have received Environmental Authorisation and remaining regulatory applications are well advanced.

The owner of the Firebird Projects (“the Firebird Owner”) is close to executing the remaining required regulatory approvals, and as such, it is the intention of the Firebird Owner to transfer the Firebird Projects in a regulatory compliant manner to the purchaser.

The Firebird Owner has mandated KPMG Services Proprietary Limited (“the Deal Advisor”) to consider bidders for the Firebird Projects, by way of a competitive bidding process (“Project Firebird”). Interested parties are hereby invited to lodge their interest to the Deal Advisor via email to projectfirebird@kpmg.co.za, by no later than 03 July 2020.

Interested parties who express interest in Project Firebird will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement and submit their expressions of interest in a specific format, for review and evaluation by the Firebird Owner.
