Increased food safety concerns require better sterilisation tech
Food safety is one of the major concerns of participants in the supply chain of agricultural commodities, says steam and heat technology company Steam Generation Africa MD John Rundle.
“Exporters and packers are challenged by the increasingly stringent standards imposed by their customers and regulatory authorities in the consumption countries.”
Swiss pasteurisation and sterilisation technology supplier Napasol has developed a pasteurisation solution for low moisture foods, such as tree nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. Dry, saturated steam is applied to these products for a short time without adding moisture. This means there is no need to use a drying step at the end of the treatment. For this process, a reliable source of a high-quality steam is essential.
Napasol has chosen UK boiler manufacturer Cochran as its preferred supplier. Through Steam Generation Africa, which is Cochran’s exclusive agent for sub-Saharan Africa, it can offer installation and a strong after-sales service to Napasol’s customers throughout Africa.
Rundle says this optimised solution has convinced an increasing number of African food producers and exporters to make Napasol their choice for pasteurisation and sterilisation.
“This is the case in the macadamia industry, where Napasol has become the leading supplier of pasteurisation equipment,” he says.
With its innovative and cost-effective technology, Napasol is increasingly attracting the interest of large producers of cashews, sesame seeds, spices and other commodities for which microbiological contamination and infestations are a frequent problem.
