IMF appoints Gita Gopinath economic counsellor, research dept director

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Gita Gopinath economic counsellor and IMF research department director.

Gopinath succeeds Maurice Obstfeld, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Gopinath currently serves as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.

Gopinath is also co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Programme at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and has authored more than 40 research articles on exchange rates, trade, investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt and emerging market crises.
