Information and communication technology (ICT) giant Huawei South Africa is offering free fifth-generation (5G) training courses for ICT postgraduates, initially at the University of the Witswatersrand (Wits) and the University of Pretoria.

The group has plans to expand the course, which forms part of Huawei’s ICT Talent Ecosystem programme, across South Africa in the near future.

The ecosystem programme, launched in sub-Saharan Africa late last year, aims to grow and support ICT skills training and skills transfer, particularly in the latest technologies of 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud and data services.

Seen as the key technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), 5G is a crucial focus area for the future growth and development of South Africa’s economy.

Some 70% of all jobs by 2020 are forecast to have an ICT component, says Huawei deputy CEO Kian Chen, adding that, as South Africa moves into 4IR, no one must be left behind.

“Most future applications in the 4IR era will run in a 5G network and environment.”

“Skills, knowledge, innovation and creativity will be the cornerstones for development in 4IR. Wits encourages industry and stakeholder partnerships that invest in our students and our future. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Huawei South Africa for their vision in planning, not just for the balance sheet and the bottom line, but also for the development and growth of human capital,” adds Wits deputy vice chancellor: research Professor Zeblon Vilakazi.

“This is an investment in the future and we are very happy to be associated with this 5G training programme.

“We believe that South Africa’s talented young people have the potential to mature into world-class experts. By enhancing industry- academic cooperation, we, as an international ICT company, hope to make our contribution to achieving the country’s development goals,” concludes Chen.

Huawei has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, African universities and industry to cultivate local ICT talent and develop a sustainable ICT ecosystem.
