Government and telcos sign excellence pact
Telecommunications leaders and government have signed a pact that will assist efforts to promote a sustainable industry built on excellence.
The Industry Stakeholder Principles of Excellence was signed this month by an initial seven companies, including Altron, Liquid Telecoms, Dark Fibre Africa, MTN and Vodacom, along with Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.
“We have had consultations with leaders of the industry to review what it is we can do as an industry in collaboration with government on all the issues that are pain points, all the issues that we need to address as an industry and all the issues that we believe are critical for government to assist us in doing our work,” says FTTX Council Africa president Andile Ngcaba.
“For any country that wants to become a part of the future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), or the digital future, it all starts by laying the infrastructure.”
There is a need for the industry and government to understand each other and find ways of concretising collaboration, says Ndabeni-Abrahams, reiterating that the critical basis of 4IR is cooperation, collaboration and efficient execution.
“We hope this will cascade to more signatories and commitments to build a cohesive structure for us to work together to address critical issues we face,” Ngcaba says.
FTTX CEO Juanita Clark says the parties have agreed to strive towards achieving digital inclusion, and collaborate to achieve this; ensure ongoing investment and contribute to job creation; develop small, medium-sized and microenterprises and entrepreneurs; have an ongoing commitment to innovation and research and development; contribute to the African continent as a whole; and commit to the next generation of mobile technologies, besides others.
